What’s the most dangerous intersection in Chicago?

Each year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) analyzes each states’ car and pedestrian crash rates for any obvious trends. What comes out of an analysis of the previous years’ crash data is a NHTSA report listing what it deems to be the worst intersections in every state.

In assessing the many different roadways in Illinois, the crossroads where South Chicago and Stony Island Avenues come together is described as being the worst intersection in the state. These two busy roadways intersect just beneath Interstate 90.

This intersection has the unique distinction of being located right in the middle of four bustling area neighborhoods: South Chicago, Avalon Park, South Shore and Greater Grand Crossing.

Data compiled by the National Safety Council (NSC) suggests that 2016 marked perhaps one of the deadliest years for American motorists in the past decade. It’s estimated that as many as 40,200 Americans perished in car crashes nationwide in 2016. Another 4.6 million were believed to have been injured in traffic accidents during that same time frame.

As you may expect, the bigger the city is, the higher the number of dangerous intersections it’s likely to have. Data showed that five of the most highly populated cities in the U.S. include Los Angeles, Phoenix, New York, Houston and Chicago. Those cities happen to be the home of their respective states’ most deadly intersections as well.

This year’s most recent report isn’t clear about whether this same Chicago intersection has previously been documented as a notably dangerous one in previous years. It’s also unclear if there’s a particular attribute some of these most dangerous intersections have that make them significantly unsafe.

If you’ve been involved in a car crash and suffered debilitating injuries as a result, then you may benefit from the advice that a Chicago motor vehicle accident attorney can provide in your personal injury case.
