A woman filed an injury lawsuit against the Steger Police Department in Cook County on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017.

In her lawsuit, the woman chronicles how she had the right of way as she proceeded through the Steger and Chicago roads intersection on May 1, 2016. As she entered the intersection, she alleges that one of the village’s police officers ran a red light before striking her car dead center.

The woman reportedly suffered various injuries in the crash. In her lawsuit, she notes that her medical condition has continued to decline since the the crash.

She also highlights how she’s worked as a waitress at Iron Skillet for the past 10 years and lacks health insurance. She notes that, despite being in pain, she’s has continued to go into work. She finds herself crippled by mounting bills though.

In her lawsuit, she accuses the officer who struck her of negligence, first for having run the stop light and then for having failed to swerve to avoid crashing into her. She’s currently demanding that the Steger Police Department pay as much as $100,000 in damages for what she argues was its officer’s negligence.

When asked to comment on the accusations waged against one of their officers, a Steger Police Department spokesperson refused comment. It’s unclear if any charges or disciplinary action was ever taken against the officer responsible for the crash.

In her lawsuit filing, the victim in this case requested for a judge to order a jury trial to decide the matter.
