A 20-year-old Beecher woman lost her life when she was struck by a suspected drunk motorist in Chicago Heights in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 31. The fatal crash occurred at the intersection of Chicago Road and 16th Place at around 3:45 a.m.

When police arrived at the crash scene, they found both the suspected drunk driver’s Toyota Camry and the young woman’s Ford Focus. As they went to render assistance to both, they found that the woman had already succumbed to her injuries.

A Cook County medical examiner’s spokesperson released a statement the following Monday acknowledging that the woman had lost her life after having suffered a multitude of debilitating injuries. Their official statement made reference to the cause of her death as accident.

As for the alleged drunk driver, the 24-year-old man was reportedly injured in the crash. The Chicago Heights man was transported from the accident scene to Olympia Field’s St. James Hospital complaining of undisclosed injuries. Some time later, he was taken to Oak Lawn’s Christ Medical Center for further evaluation.

After being released by the hospital, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI). When booked in jail, he was formally charged with an aggravated DUI for having caused an accident resulting in another motorist’s death.

When the man was arraigned on the Monday following the accident, a Markham judge presiding over the matter denied his request that bail be set in the matter. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for April 9.

If you’ve lost a loved one at the hands of a suspected drunk driver, then a Chicago attorney can advise you of your right to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the person responsible for causing his or her death.
